Update the Surge app on your terminal

Make sure a terminal is running the newest Surge version, and what to do when it keeps the old one.

Who is this guide for?Anyone at the terminal. Force stop and Clear cache are in Android's settings on the terminal.

Before you begin

  • No sale is in progress on the terminal.
  • Surge support has told you the version number to expect, or asked you to update.

Why a terminal can be behind

Surge updates arrive on their own, but a terminal picks them up only when the app fully restarts. Swiping the app away isn't always enough, so a terminal can keep running the old version after an update.

Check the version

On the terminal
  1. Tap Settings in the bottom bar.
  2. Tap This terminal.
  3. Read the number next to Version. Compare it with the version support gave you.

If the version is behind

On the terminal
  1. Open Android's Settings app on the terminal.
  2. Go to Apps and tap Surge POS.
  3. Tap Force stop, then confirm.
  4. Open Surge again and check Settings > This terminal > Version.
  5. If it's still behind, go back to Surge POS in Android's Apps, open Storage & cache, and tap Clear cache.
  6. Open Surge again and check the version once more.
Never tap Clear data (sometimes called Clear storage). It erases the terminal's pairing and its open cash drawer, and any sales still waiting to send. The terminal then has to be paired again. Clear cache is the only one you need.
Force stop doesn't lose sales. Sales waiting to send stay on the terminal and go up when it reconnects. Waiting to send under This terminal shows how many there are.
If you can't reach Android's Settings because the terminal is locked to Surge, or the version is still behind after Clear cache, contact Surge support. Email info@surgeups.com.
