Choose what each person can do at the till

Fine-tune refunds, manager discounts, the cash drawer and reports for each person, and choose what the till does when someone isn't allowed.

Who is this guide for?Admins and owners in the back office, on Surge Plus and Surge Premium.

Roles and switches

A till role fills in four switches. You can then change them for one person without changing their role.

  • Refunds and voids: give money back and cancel a rung-up sale.
  • Manager discounts: apply discounts marked as needing a manager.
  • Cash drawer: paid in, paid out, drops, no sale, and closing the drawer.
  • Reports and close batch: see sales totals and everyone's tips, and close the card batch.
  • A Cashier starts with none of these, a Shift lead with the cash drawer, and a Manager with all four. An Owner always has all four.

Change someone's switches

On the back office
  1. Click Team in the menu, then click the person's name.
  2. Under Till access, find Beyond selling, followed by their name.
  3. Turn switches on or off. Each switch saves as soon as you change it.
  4. To change their role instead, choose a Till role and click Save role. This sets the switches to what that role usually gets.

When someone isn't allowed

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Till access.
  2. Under When someone isn't allowed to do something, choose Ask for a code from someone who is (the till shows everything and asks for a code when needed), or Hide it (the till leaves out what that person can't do).
  3. Click Save.
On Surge Free everyone with a till code can do everything at the till, and no manager's code is asked for. A refund to a card without a sale still takes an owner's or manager's code.
The Cash drawer switch only shows where your plan includes the cash drawer.
