Take a card payment

Charge a card by tap, chip or swipe, and handle tips, signatures and cards approved for part of the total.

Who is this guide for?Anyone signed in to the terminal.

Before you begin

  • The terminal is online. Cards can't be taken without a connection.
  • The ticket has at least one item or amount on it.

Charge the card

On the terminal
  1. Tap Charge on the sell screen.
  2. If your shop has a cash price, the terminal asks How would you like to pay? Tap Card. Otherwise tap Card under Amount due.
  3. If tips are on, the customer sees Add a tip? They pick an amount, tap Other amount, or tap No tip.
  4. On a terminal with a built-in card reader, turn the screen to the customer. They check the total and tap Confirm & Pay.
  5. The customer taps, inserts or swipes their card. Your screen says Ask the customer to present their card.
  6. Once the card is read, the screen says Talking to the bank. Leave the card where it is. Wait. This can take up to 15 seconds.
  7. If signatures are on, the customer signs on Please sign and taps Done.
  8. The screen shows Paid. Choose a receipt.

The tip question

Tips are asked for on card payments only, before the card is charged. The customer sees Add a tip? with three choices. On a terminal with a screen facing the customer, the question shows there.

Until you change them, a ticket under $10 offers $1, $2 and $3, and a ticket of $10 or more offers 15%, 20% and 25%.

On the terminal
  1. Tap Settings in the bottom bar, then Tips.
  2. Enter a manager code when asked.
  3. Under Percentages, change the three rates. The middle one is already selected when the customer's screen opens. The screen shows what they come to on a $20 ticket.
  4. To stop asking for tips, turn off Ask for a tip. The terminal then goes straight from Charge to payment.

What the customer sees

On a terminal with a built-in reader, the customer's screen follows the sale:

  • Tap, insert or swipe while the reader waits for the card.
  • Authorising and "Please keep your card in place." while the bank answers.
  • Approved and "Thank you." when it goes through.
  • One moment and "Please hand this back to the cashier." if the reader stopped without an answer. They tap Back to the till and hand it back to you.

Cancel a card payment

You can tap Cancel payment only while the terminal is waiting for the card. Once it says Talking to the bank, there is no cancel. The bank is already deciding.

After you tap Cancel payment, the screen says "Asked the reader to stop. If the card has already gone through, the sale will finish." Wait for the result before you do anything else.

When a card covers only part of the total

Some cards (often prepaid or gift-style cards) are approved for less than the total. The terminal shows Part paid, with a line such as "Card approved for $15.00 of $24.00 — $9.00 still owed. Take the rest by another card or cash."

On the terminal
  1. Tell the customer how much is Still owed.
  2. Tap Take the rest.
  3. Take the remaining amount by another card or by cash.
Tapping Later on Part paid leaves the sale open. The sell screen then shows Part-paid sale with what's still owed, and you can finish it from any terminal.
If a card attempt ends without a clear approved or declined answer, don't run the card again until you've checked. The customer may already have been charged. See "Card declined or no answer from the bank".
Tips and signatures are set in Settings > Tips and Settings > Signature. If you don't see them, they're off for your location. Ask us to turn them on.
