Give someone a till code, or change it

Set a new till code or till role for a team member, or reset a forgotten one.

Who is this guide for?Admins and owners in the back office. Owners can also do it from the Surge app.

About till codes

A till code identifies who is at the counter, so every sale carries a name. It's 4 to 8 digits. Codes can't be read back later, by anyone. If someone forgets theirs, set a new one.

Set or change the code

  1. Click Team in the menu, then click the person's name.
  2. Under Till access, click Give a till code, or Change code or role if they already have one.
  3. Enter the New code.
  4. Choose what they Can do.
  5. Click Save code. You see Till code changed.

Change only the role

In the back office, someone who already has a code can get a new role without a new code. On their profile, under Till access, choose a Till role and click Save role. Making someone an Owner at the till needs a new code: use Change code or role.

If someone is locked out

A wrong code doesn't belong to anyone, so it counts against everyone at the business. After 5 wrong codes, till codes at your business are locked for 15 minutes. The terminal says Too many wrong codes. Try again later.

In the back office, a locked person's row on Team shows Locked out, and their profile says until when. One person guessing can lock everyone out, so if this happens often, ask your team who is having trouble with their code.

To choose whether the terminal asks for a code at all, or signs people out after a quiet spell, go to Store setup > Till access. Use Ask for a code before selling and Sign out after.
