Who is this guide for?Anyone signed in to the terminal.
Offline means cash only
When the terminal loses its connection, it keeps selling from the items it has stored. Cash works. Cards don't, because a card can't be approved without the bank. A card attempt shows Nothing was charged.
A cash sale taken offline finishes as usual. The Paid screen says "Offline — this sale will sync when the connection returns".
What works and what doesn't
- Works: adding items, discounts, cash payments, change and the cash drawer.
- Works: printing receipts, and kitchen printers on your shop's own network.
- Needs a connection: card payments and refunds.
- Needs a connection: looking up customers. The terminal says "Cannot reach the server — customers need a connection".
- Needs a connection: Tabs, Orders, Reports and email receipts.
- Needs a connection: the first payment on a split. Later cash shares can be taken offline.
Check what's waiting to send
On the terminal
- Tap Settings in the bottom bar, then This terminal.
- Under Data, Waiting to send shows how many offline sales haven't reached Surge yet.
- When the connection is back, tap Update now to send them straight away. The count drops to 0.
Nothing is lost while you're offline. Saved sales are sent on their own when the connection returns, even after the app restarts.
Don't uninstall Surge or clear its data while Waiting to send is above 0. Those sales are stored only on this terminal until they're sent.
If the Paid screen says "NOT RECORDED — write this sale down. Storage is full or unavailable.", the sale was not saved. Write it down by hand and contact support.
If the sell screen shows Catalog is more than a day old, the terminal hasn't reached Surge for a day, and prices may be out of date.
