How your program shows on the receipt

The exact words your receipts use for the cash saving and the card fee, and why there's never a percentage.

Who is this guide for?Owners, and staff who answer customer questions about receipts.

On a cash receipt

When a customer pays cash, the saving is printed as its own line after tax, as a minus amount. The name of the line matches your merchant agreement:

  • Cash discount program: Cash discount.
  • Dual pricing program: Cash price.
  • Surcharge program: Fees removed.

Under the cash payment

Below the cash payment line, the receipt shows Card price with what the same sale would have cost by card. This lets the customer see what they saved.

On a surcharge program's card receipt

  • The card fee is shown in dollars on a line called Fees. When the fee is already inside the prices, it's printed after the total as Fees included, so it's never counted twice.
  • The receipt also carries the sentence "Card payments include fees, not greater than the cost of acceptance." The card brands require it.
  • Cash discount and dual pricing receipts don't carry this sentence. The named line is enough.

No percentages

Receipts show dollar amounts only. Your program's rate is never printed, and the word "surcharge" isn't used.
