Pair a new terminal

Connect a new terminal to your business with the 6-digit code on its screen so it can start selling.

Who is this guide for?Owners and Admins. The code is entered in the back office.

Before you begin

  • The terminal is switched on and connected to Wi-Fi.
  • You can sign in to the back office on a computer or phone.
  • If you have more than one location, you know which location the terminal belongs to.
  • You have a free till license. The Licenses card at the top of Store setup > Devices shows what's in use.

About pairing

A new terminal doesn't belong to any business until you pair it. While it waits, the Surge app on the terminal shows Pair this register with a 6-digit code underneath.

You type that code into the back office. The terminal then sets itself up with your items, taxes and settings. There's nothing else to do on the terminal.

Pair the terminal

  1. Sign in to the back office.
  2. If you have more than one location, pick the location this terminal will sell for.
  3. Go to Store setup > Devices.
  4. Under Pair a device, type the 6 digits into Code on the device screen.
  5. Click Pair. A note confirms the terminal is paired, and it appears in the Fleet list.
  6. Look at the terminal. Within a few seconds it downloads your items and is ready for staff to sign in.

If the code doesn't work

  • The screen shows dashes instead of numbers: the terminal can't reach Surge yet. Check its Wi-Fi connection.
  • The back office says the code has expired: a code lasts 24 hours. Restart the Surge app on the terminal to get a new one.
  • The back office says the device is already paired: it belongs to a location already. Find it in the Fleet list.
  • The back office says No device is showing that code: check the code on the terminal and type it again.
  • The back office says every till license is in use, or that Surge Free includes one till: unpair a till you no longer use, or ask Surge for another license. On Surge Free, move to Surge Plus to pair a second till. A refused terminal keeps its code and pairs as soon as there's room.
  • The terminal says Not set up: the register was opened in a web browser, not the installed app. Open the Surge app instead.
  • The terminal says No catalog yet: it's paired but hasn't downloaded your items. It starts selling as soon as it reaches the network.

Move a terminal or start over

To move a terminal to another location, or before the app is reinstalled, click Unpair next to it in the Fleet list. The terminal shows a new code, and you can pair it again.

Only Admins see the Pair a device box. Owners always have Admin access.
Retire is permanent. A retired terminal can't be paired again from the back office. Use Unpair if you only want to move it.
