Set up the kitchen display

Show each station's items on a screen in the kitchen, to tap off as they're made.

Who is this guide for?Admins switch it on in the back office. Stations are set up on the terminal with a manager code.

Before you begin

  • Kitchen display screens are an add-on for Surge Plus ($25 a screen a month) and Surge Premium ($15 a screen a month). Email Surge support to add screens.
  • Kitchen screens need Orders to pick up, which is part of Surge Plus and Surge Premium.
  • Without the add-on, the switch on Features says Add-on: ask us to switch it on.

Step 1: switch kitchen screens on

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Features.
  2. Switch on Orders to pick up.
  3. Switch on Kitchen display screens.
  4. Click Save changes.

Step 2: set up stations

For a pass (expo) screen, switch on This is the pass (expo). The pass sees every item and each station's progress, and makes nothing itself.

On the terminal
  1. Open Settings > Kitchen printers and screens and enter a manager code.
  2. Open the Screens tab and tap Add a screen.
  3. Type a Name, such as Grill.
  4. Leave Show on a kitchen screen on.
  5. Under Categories it takes, tick the categories this station makes, or switch on Every category.
  6. To print its tickets too, switch on Also print on a printer and enter the Printer address.
  7. Tap Create.

Step 3: pair the screen

Each item goes to the station that takes its category. The pass shows every item.

  1. Pair the kitchen screen on Store setup > Devices, like a terminal.

What the screen shows

Tickets sit in three columns by how long they've waited: New (blue), Waiting (yellow, after 10 minutes) and Running late (red, after 20 minutes).

A ticket sent from a table is titled by the table, such as Table 6, or Tables 6 + 7 for a party across two. A table with a name of its own, such as Patio 3, keeps it. A ticket sent under a name shows that name.

On the back office
  1. To change the times for the whole location, go to Store setup > Features and find Kitchen screen timing.
  2. Set Yellow after and Red after, then click Save.

What the buttons do

  • Tap an item to mark it made. It shows DONE.
  • All done finishes the whole ticket at this station.
  • Ready, on the pass screen, means the order is ready to hand over.
  • Rush flags the ticket RUSH on every screen. Tap Rush ✓ to clear it.
  • Recall shows tickets finished in the last half hour. Bring back returns one to the board.
  • Sound on / Sound off turns the new-ticket sound on or off.
  • All day shows totals of each item still to make.
  • Station picks which station this screen shows.

Tags on items

  • VOID: the item was taken off the order.
  • WAS: the quantity changed. It shows the old number.
  • HOLD: held for a later course.
  • FIRED: a held course has been sent.
  • ADDED: added to the order after it was sent.
  • LATE: the ticket is running late.
A station can have its own yellow and red times, set on the terminal when you edit the station. Leave them empty to use the location's times.
Once screens are in use, Reports > Kitchen Times shows how long each station takes.
