Set up happy hour and timed discounts

Run a discount on a schedule, such as 20% off draft beer from 4 to 6 on weekdays.

Who is this guide for?Admins in the back office.

Before you begin

  • Timed discounts are part of Surge Plus and Surge Premium. On Surge Free the switch shows Needs Surge Plus.
  • Happy hour and timed discounts is on under Store setup > Features. It's on from the start for bars, cafés and restaurants.

Make a happy hour

To put a schedule on a discount you already have, click Set a schedule next to it on the same card. A discount where the cashier types the amount can't be scheduled.

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Tax & discounts.
  2. On the Happy hour and timed discounts card, click New happy hour.
  3. Fill in Name. This is what the receipt shows.
  4. Under Off, choose A percentage or An amount, and enter it. An amount comes off each item, so six pints at $1 off is $6 off.
  5. Click Next: when it runs.
  6. Tick the days it runs, and set From and Until.
  7. Under Applies to, choose All items, Chosen categories or Chosen items, and tick the ones you want.
  8. Click Save schedule.

Change or stop a schedule

Click Change to change the days, times or items. Click Remove schedule to stop it running by the clock. The discount then goes back to the list cashiers pick from by hand.

Late-night schedules

Times follow your location's time zone. The business day runs from 4:00 AM to 4:00 AM.

  • Friday 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM counts as Friday night. Tick Friday only.
  • A schedule can end at 4:00 AM but can't run past it. For 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, make two: one ending at 4:00 AM and one starting at 4:00 AM.

What the terminal shows

While the schedule is on, the terminal applies the discount by itself, with no button and no manager code. The ordering kiosk applies it too.

  • Each discounted line shows the discount's name and amount under it, for example "Happy hour −$1.00".
  • The totals show a row named after the discount, then a "Discount" row for anything a cashier added.
  • A scheduled discount isn't in the cashier's discount list. Cashiers can't add or remove it.

Rules worth knowing

  • One timed discount per line. If two schedules cover the same item, the guest gets whichever takes more off.
  • A cashier's discount comes off what's left. The timed discount comes off first. Together they never take more than the line costs.
The receipt shows the discount by name under the subtotal, with what it took off.
