Hold and fire courses, and use seat numbers

Send each course when the table is ready, say which guest each item is for, and split a bill by seat.

Who is this guide for?Admins set up courses in the back office. Anyone signed in to the terminal fires courses and uses seats.

Before you begin

  • Courses and Seats are part of Surge Premium ($69 a month). On a lower plan each switch shows Needs Surge Premium.
  • Seats also needs Tables. With Tables off, Seats stays off.
  • Courses only hold on a terminal with a kitchen printer set up.

Switch them on

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Features.
  2. Under How service runs, turn on Courses, Seats, or both.
  3. Click Save changes.

Set up courses

You can have up to 8 courses. Under What the kitchen sees, Show the kitchen what is being held prints a slip marked HOLD with the first course, listing what's still to come.

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Courses.
  2. With no courses yet, click Start with Drinks, Starters, Mains, Desserts. Or click Add a course and type a name.
  3. Tick Never held, like drinks for a course that always goes at once.
  4. Use ↑ and ↓ to put the courses in serving order.
  5. Under Where each category starts, pick a course for each category. No course leaves it out.
  6. Click Save courses.

Hold and fire

The ticket groups lines under each course. A held course says Held with its Fire button. A sent course says Fired and the time. You can also fire from the floor: each seated table shows a button for its next held course.

Fire all courses sends everything still held. Paying a ticket always fires whatever is still held. An item added after its course went is held too; fire it with its button.

On the terminal
  1. Ring up the whole order. Each item lands in its category's course.
  2. Tap Send to kitchen. The first course goes now. The later ones are held.
  3. When the table is ready for the next course, tap its Fire button on the ticket, such as Fire Mains.

Move an item to another course

If the kitchen already has the item, moving it changes the ticket only.

On the terminal
  1. On the ticket, tap the item's course button. It shows the course name.
  2. Tap the course it should go out with, or No course.

Use seat numbers

When you seat a table, the terminal asks How many guests?. Tap a number. The ticket then shows a row of seat buttons: Table for items for the whole table, 1, 2, 3 and so on for each seat, + to add a guest, and the guest count (such as 4 guests) to change it.

On the terminal
  1. Tap a seat number.
  2. Ring up that guest's items.
  3. Tap the next seat and carry on.
  4. To move an item, tap its seat tag, such as S2, and choose another seat or Table (shared).

Split the bill by seat

Each seat pays for its own items plus an even part of the shared items. Each guest adds their own tip.

On the terminal
  1. Open the table and tap Split this bill.
  2. Tap By seat.
  3. Tap one or more seats.
  4. Tap the button to take that seat's share, such as Take $42.00 · Seat 1, and take payment.
Kitchen slips print the seat before each item, such as "S2 1 x Steak". Items for the whole table say "FOR THE TABLE".
If printing isn't confirmed, the course says Fired, printing not confirmed. Tap the button to print it again; the slip is marked REPRINT.
You can't lower the guest count below a seat that has items on it. Move those items first.
