Connect a cash drawer

Plug a cash drawer into a Volt, turn on the drawer, and check that it opens.

Who is this guide for?Owners and Admins turn the feature on in the back office. Anyone can open the drawer on the terminal.

Before you begin

  • You have a Volt (P3 MIX). Only terminals with a built-in printer can drive a drawer, and Volt is the one with a drawer port.
  • The drawer's cable is plugged into the Volt's cash drawer port.

Turn on the cash drawer

Skip this if Drawer already shows under Settings on the terminal.

On the back office
  1. Go to Store setup > Features.
  2. Turn on Cash drawer.
  3. Click Save changes. Terminals pick it up the next time they check in.

Open the drawer and test it

On the terminal
  1. Tap Settings in the bottom bar, then Drawer. You can also tap No drawer open — open one on the sell screen.
  2. Count the cash you're starting with and key it in.
  3. Tap Open drawer.
  4. On the drawer screen, tap No sale. The drawer should pop open.

If the drawer doesn't open

  • Check the cable is pushed fully into the Volt's drawer port.
  • Check the drawer isn't locked with its key.
  • Spark, Arc and Beacon can't open a drawer. Arc and Beacon have no printer, and Spark has no drawer port.
Paid in, Paid out, Drop to safe and No sale all open the drawer and are recorded on the shift, even when the terminal is offline.
The cash drawer is part of Surge Plus and Surge Premium. Once it's on, the drawer opens by itself for a cash sale and a cash refund too.
Who may use the drawer is set for each person with the Cash drawer switch. See "Choose what each person can do at the till".
