Who is this guide for?Owners and Admins add barcodes in the back office. Anyone can scan at the terminal.
Before you begin
- A barcode scanner that types like a keyboard. Most USB and Bluetooth scanners do. Surge doesn't scan with a camera.
- Barcode scanning is part of Surge Plus and Surge Premium, with the item menu. On Surge Free the Barcode scanning switch shows Needs Surge Plus.
Add a barcode to an item
Each size has its own barcode. Two items can't share one: you'll see Another item already uses that barcode. You can also bring barcodes in with an import, in the GTIN column.
- Go to Store setup > Items and open the item.
- In the Variations card, click into the Barcode box for the size.
- Scan the item's barcode. The scanner fills the box and saves it.
- If you type it instead, press Enter or click away to save.
- Tap Inventory, then + New. Enter a manager code.
- Fill in the item. In Barcode, scan the item or type the number.
- Tap Save.
Scan at the terminal
On the terminal
- Stay on the sell screen.
- Scan the item. It goes on the sale, the same as tapping it.
- No item with barcode and a number means no item has that barcode yet. Add it in the back office.
- A scan also matches an item's SKU.
- Scans only work on the sell screen, not while a payment is being taken.
